Vietnam’s Green Highland Escape
The Mộc Châu Plateau in Sơn La province sits at 1,050 meters elevation — a vast, gently rolling tableland of tea plantations, dairy farms, and seasonal flower fields that feels more like the Scottish Highlands than tropical Vietnam. It’s one of the country’s most underrated destinations, offering spectacular scenery without the crowds of Sapa or Đà Lạt.
Tea Plantations
Mộc Châu produces some of Vietnam’s finest green tea, and the plantations here are strikingly photogenic — rows of bright green tea bushes stretching to the horizon, with workers in conical hats plucking leaves by hand. Visit Mộc Châu Tea Farm or Tân Lập Tea Hill for the best views and a chance to taste freshly processed tea. The high altitude and cool temperatures produce tea with a distinctive sweetness.
Seasonal Flower Spectacles
- January–February: Plum and peach blossom season — entire hillsides explode in white and pink. The Hmong New Year celebrations coincide with the blooms, adding cultural festivities to the natural beauty.
- October–November: Wild sunflower season — golden fields of dã quỳ (Mexican sunflowers) blanket the plateau, attracting photographers from across Vietnam.
- November–December: Mustard flower season — bright yellow rapeseed fields create painterly landscapes.
Dairy Farming & Fresh Milk
Mộc Châu is Vietnam’s dairy capital, home to the Mộc Châu Milk brand known nationwide. Visit one of the cooperative farms to see Holstein cows grazing in lush meadows (an unusual sight in Vietnam) and taste ultra-fresh milk, yogurt, and the famous sữa chua nếp cẩm (purple sticky rice yogurt) — a beloved Vietnamese treat.
