The Wild Northeast
Cao Bằng is one of Vietnam’s most remote and scenically spectacular provinces — a land of towering limestone mountains, deep river valleys, and ethnic Tày and Nùng communities living as they have for centuries. The journey here is an adventure in itself, with winding mountain roads offering jaw-dropping views at every turn.
Bản Giốc Waterfall
Straddling the Vietnamese-Chinese border, Bản Giốc (Detian in Chinese) is the fourth-largest transnational waterfall in the world. Water plunges 53 meters across a 300-meter-wide limestone shelf in three spectacular tiers. The surrounding landscape — jade-green rice paddies, karst peaks cloaked in jungle, and the meandering Quây Sơn River — is Vietnam at its most primordially beautiful. Visit during rainy season (May–September) for the most powerful water flow.
Ngườm Ngao Cave
Just 3 kilometers from Bản Giốc waterfall, this massive limestone cave extends nearly 3 kilometers underground. Walkways lead past stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years, some reaching 30 meters in height. The cave’s acoustics create an eerie, cathedral-like atmosphere.
Pác Bó Cave & Hồ Chí Minh’s Revolutionary Base
In 1941, after 30 years abroad, Hồ Chí Minh returned to Vietnam through Pác Bó in Cao Bằng province. He lived in a cave beside a mountain stream, which he named “Lê-nin Stream,” and the mountain above, “Karl Marx Peak.” Today, the cave and surrounding area are a pilgrimage site where visitors can see where Uncle Hồ organized the Việt Minh independence movement.
Northeast Loop Motorbike Route
The Northeast Loop (Cao Bằng → Bắc Kạn → Hà Giang) is one of Asia’s great motorcycle journeys. Four to six days of riding through some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on the continent, past terraced rice fields, ethnic minority villages, and along roads carved into sheer cliff faces. Not for the faint-hearted, but absolutely unforgettable.
