Đà Nẵng: Vietnam’s Most Livable City
Once merely a transit point between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Đà Nẵng has emerged as one of Southeast Asia’s most exciting coastal cities. A 30-kilometer stretch of pristine sandy beaches, a thriving food scene, world-class resorts, and easy access to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites (Hội An, Mỹ Sơn, and Huế) make it an ideal base for exploring central Vietnam.
Must-See Attractions
Bà Nà Hills & The Golden Bridge (Cầu Vàng)
The Golden Bridge has become Vietnam’s most photographed modern landmark. Supported by two enormous stone hands that appear to lift the bridge from the mountainside, this 150-meter-long pedestrian walkway sits at 1,414 meters elevation in the Bà Nà Hills. The views across the Trường Sơn mountain range are breathtaking, especially when clouds roll through the valley below, making it feel like you’re walking on air.
Getting there requires riding one of the world’s longest cable cars (5,801 meters), which rises from the tropical lowlands through misty forest to the French colonial-era hill station at the summit. The park complex includes a recreated French village, Fantasy Park (Asia’s largest indoor amusement park), Buddhist temples, and manicured gardens.
Marble Mountains (Ngũ Hành Sơn)
Five limestone karst hills — named for the five elements (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth) — rise dramatically from the coastal plain just south of the city. Thủy Sơn (Water Mountain), the largest, contains a network of Buddhist caves, grottoes, and pagodas. Climb the 156 stone steps to Vọng Hải Đài (Sea Viewing Platform) for panoramic views stretching from the East Sea to the misty mountains of the interior. Inside Huyền Không Cave, shafts of sunlight pierce through ceiling holes, illuminating Buddha statues in an almost supernatural glow.
Mỹ Khê Beach
Named by Forbes as one of the world’s six most attractive beaches, Mỹ Khê stretches for nearly 10 kilometers of powdery white sand. Dawn is magical here — local fishermen haul in their nets as the sun rises over the East Sea, casting everything in warm amber light. Surfing conditions are excellent from September to March, with consistent swells reaching 1–2 meters.
Dragon Bridge (Cầu Rồng)
This 666-meter bridge is shaped like a dragon — and every Saturday and Sunday at 9 PM, it literally breathes fire and water. Thousands gather along the Hàn River banks to watch the spectacle. It’s kitsch, it’s thrilling, and it’s quintessentially Vietnamese.
Đà Nẵng Food You Cannot Miss
- Mì Quảng — wide turmeric-tinted noodles with shrimp, pork, peanuts, rice crackers, and a small ladleful of rich broth. The dish that defines central Vietnamese cuisine.
- Bánh Xèo — crispy, sizzling crepes stuffed with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts. Wrap in lettuce and herbs, dip in nước chấm. Perfection.
- Bún Chả Cá — fish cake noodle soup, a Đà Nẵng breakfast staple unlike anything found elsewhere in Vietnam.
- Bánh Tráng Cuốn Thịt Heo — thin rice paper wraps with sliced boiled pork, herbs, and fermented shrimp paste sauce. Humble but addictive.
