The World’s Most Extraordinary Temple

Nothing in Vietnam — or perhaps the world — prepares you for the Cao Đài Holy See in Tây Ninh. This is the Vatican of the Cao Đài religion, a uniquely Vietnamese faith that synthesizes Buddhism, Christianity, Taoism, Confucianism, and Islam into a single theological framework. The temple itself is a riotous explosion of color — dragon-wrapped columns in pink and turquoise, a ceiling painted with clouds and stars, an enormous “Divine Eye” (a left eye in a triangle) watching from the altar, and hundreds of white-robed worshippers praying in perfect symmetry during noon ceremonies.

Cao Đài Noon Prayer Ceremony

The daily noon prayer ceremony (12:00 PM) is open to respectful visitors. Worshippers in white, yellow, blue, and red robes (representing different “branches” of the faith) enter the temple in gender-segregated columns. The ceremony unfolds with incense, chanting, and the hypnotic sound of traditional Vietnamese instruments. Visitors watch from the upstairs gallery — photography is permitted but silence is expected. It’s one of the most visually and spiritually striking experiences in all of Southeast Asia.

Bà Đen (Black Virgin Mountain)

At 986 meters, Núi Bà Đen is the highest peak in southern Vietnam. A cable car system (the world’s longest, at 5,802 meters) carries visitors to the summit, where temples perch on misty ridges and views extend across the flat Mekong Delta to the Cambodian border. For the adventurous, a hiking trail ascends through tropical forest to the summit — a challenging 3-hour climb rewarded by panoramic vistas and the atmospheric Linh Sơn Tiên Thạch Temple.
