Đà Lạt: Romance in the Highlands

At 1,500 meters elevation on the Lâm Viên Plateau, Đà Lạt (Dalat) enjoys temperatures that rarely exceed 25°C — a miraculous escape from Vietnam’s tropical heat. Founded as a hill station by French colonialists in 1893, the city retains an almost European charm with pine-forested hills, flower gardens, and Art Deco villas lining quiet boulevards.

Vietnamese honeymooners have been coming here for decades, earning Đà Lạt the nickname “City of Love” — but today, the city also draws specialty coffee enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and anyone craving cool mountain air.

Coffee Culture: Farm to Cup

Vietnam is the world’s second-largest coffee producer, and the Central Highlands around Đà Lạt are its beating heart. Visit K’Ho Coffee, a social enterprise run by the indigenous K’Ho minority people, where you can tour their organic arabica farm, learn traditional processing methods, and cup single-origin beans that rival anything from Ethiopia or Colombia.

In town, La Viet Coffee and The Married Beans represent the new wave of Vietnamese specialty coffee — pour-overs, cold brews, and espresso flights served in architecturally stunning spaces carved into hillsides.

Waterfalls & Nature

• Datanla Falls — ride an alpine coaster through pine forest to reach these multi-tiered falls
• Elephant Falls (Thác Voi) — a powerful, thundering cascade accessible via a slippery but thrilling rock scramble
• Pongour Falls — the widest waterfall in the region, cascading over seven tiers of basalt steps. Best visited during rainy season (June–October)

French Colonial Heritage

Stroll through the French Quarter neighborhoods around Trần Hưng Đạo Street, where Art Deco and Norman-style villas now house boutique hotels, cafés, and artist studios. The Đà Lạt Palace Hotel (1922) and Đà Lạt Railway Station (1938) are preserved architectural gems. The railway station — with its Art Deco façade and colored glass windows — still operates a short tourist train to the nearby village of Trại Mát through flower fields.
