The End of the Road — and the Beginning of the Sea

Cà Mau is where Vietnam ends. The southernmost province of the country, it juts into the sea like the tail of a dragon, ending at Mũi Cà Mau (Cà Mau Cape) — the geographic tip of mainland Vietnam. To stand here is to feel the country’s entire 3,200-kilometer length stretching behind you, from the Chinese border to this final point where the East Sea meets the Gulf of Thailand.

U Minh Hạ National Park

One of the world’s largest peat swamp forests, U Minh Hạ is a labyrinth of tràm (melaleuca) trees rising from dark, tea-colored water. Explore by narrow boat through channels barely wider than the vessel. The forest canopy filters sunlight into emerald shafts, and the air is thick with the medicinal scent of melaleuca leaves. Birdwatchers will spot painted storks, grey herons, and the rare sarus crane.

Năm Căn Floating Market

Unlike the tourist-oriented floating markets near Cần Thơ, Năm Căn is the real deal — a chaotic, colorful convergence of wooden boats selling everything from fresh seafood to household goods. Boats are identified by the goods hung from tall poles on their prows: a pineapple means pineapples for sale, a broom means household goods. Arrive before 6 AM for the full experience.

Mangrove Ecosystem & Bird Sanctuaries

Cà Mau’s mangrove forests are among the most extensive in Southeast Asia, covering over 40,000 hectares. These tangled root systems are nurseries for shrimp, crab, and fish — the ecological foundation of the Mekong Delta’s seafood industry. Boat tours through the mangrove channels reveal mudskippers, monitor lizards, and vast colonies of cormorants nesting in the treetops.
