The Land of the Lotus
Đồng Tháp is known throughout Vietnam as “The Land of the Lotus” — and for good reason. From June to September, vast fields of pink and white lotus flowers bloom across the province’s wetlands, creating one of Vietnam’s most ethereal natural spectacles. The lotus is Vietnam’s national flower, symbolizing purity, and Đồng Tháp is its spiritual heartland.
Tháp Mười Lotus Fields
The most spectacular blooms occur in Tháp Mười District, where hectares of lotus ponds burst into simultaneous bloom. Local women in conical hats paddle through the flowers on narrow wooden boats, harvesting lotus seeds, flowers, and roots — all edible. The best viewing is at sunrise, when mist rises from the ponds and the flowers glow pink in the first light.
Tràm Chim National Park
This 7,500-hectare wetland park is Vietnam’s most important bird sanctuary, protecting the habitat of the eastern sarus crane — the tallest flying bird in the world (standing up to 1.8 meters). Over 230 bird species inhabit the park’s mix of grasslands, melaleuca forest, and seasonal floodplains. December to May is the best birdwatching season.
Community-Based Ecotourism
Đồng Tháp is a pioneer of community-based tourism in the Mekong Delta. Visitors can:
- Stay in homestays along the Mekong tributaries, participating in fishing, rice planting, and cooking local specialties
- Visit traditional craft villages producing chiếu (sleeping mats) and nem (fermented pork)
- Take boat tours through the Gáo Giồng bird sanctuary — home to thousands of storks and herons nesting in submerged forests
