The Heartland of Vietnamese Identity
Nghệ An is Vietnam’s largest province and one of its most culturally significant — it’s the birthplace of President Hồ Chí Minh. The province stretches from the coast to the Lao border, encompassing everything from pristine beaches to towering mountains and pristine national parks that few foreign visitors ever reach.
Kim Liên Village — Birthplace of Hồ Chí Minh
Visit the simple stilt house in Kim Liên village where the father of modern Vietnam was born in 1890. The preserved homestead, shaded by tropical trees, offers an intimate glimpse into rural Vietnamese life at the turn of the 20th century. A small museum displays photographs and personal effects.
Cửa Lò Beach
A 10-kilometer stretch of golden sand, Cửa Lò is popular with Vietnamese vacationers but virtually unknown to international tourists. The beach is wide, the water is warm, and the seafood is fresh — grilled squid and boiled shrimp served at beachside stalls for a fraction of Nha Trang prices.
Pù Mát National Park
One of Vietnam’s largest and most biodiverse protected areas, Pù Mát encompasses 94,000 hectares of primary tropical forest bordering Laos. The park shelters elephants, Asiatic black bears, and the critically endangered saola (the “Asian unicorn”). Multi-day treks with local Thai minority guides lead to waterfalls, limestone caves, and remote villages accessible only on foot.
Thai Minority Village Homestays
Stay in a traditional Thai stilt house in Con Cuông district, where communities maintain their weaving traditions, rice wine fermentation, and communal gong performances. Evening meals are communal affairs — rice, grilled fish, forest vegetables, and sticky rice wine passed around in bamboo tubes.
