The Heart of the Mekong Delta

Cần Thơ, the largest city in the Mekong Delta, is the gateway to Vietnam’s extraordinary river world. Here, life revolves around water — houses float on rivers, children paddle to school in sampans, and the morning market happens on boats. The Mekong Delta (Đồng Bằng Sông Cửu Long) produces over half of Vietnam’s rice and the vast majority of its tropical fruit, earning it the nickname “Vietnam’s Rice Bowl.”

Cái Răng Floating Market

Wake before dawn and board a motorboat for the 30-minute ride to Cái Răng, the Delta’s largest floating market. Hundreds of boats converge at the confluence of canals, their wares displayed on tall poles — watermelons, mangoes, pineapples, dragon fruit, coconuts. Smaller boats weave through selling phở and cà phê sữa đá (iced milk coffee) to merchants. The market peaks between 5–8 AM, and the entire scene is illuminated by the golden Mekong sunrise.

Fruit Orchard Tours

The Delta’s tropical climate produces fruit of extraordinary sweetness and variety. Visit an orchard in Mỹ Khánh or Phong Điền to taste directly from the tree:

  • Vú Sữa (Star Apple) — a creamy, milky fruit unique to southern Vietnam
  • Sầu Riêng (Durian) — love it or hate it, Delta durian is the sweetest in Vietnam
  • Măng Cụt (Mangosteen) — the “Queen of Fruits” with its snow-white, perfectly segmented flesh
  • Chôm Chôm (Rambutan) — sweet, translucent fruit encased in hairy red shells

Canal Life & Homestays

The best way to experience the Delta is to stay overnight in a riverside homestay. Float along narrow canals shaded by dừa nước (water coconut palms), watch farmers tend fish ponds and rice paddies, and share a home-cooked dinner of cá tai tượng chiên giòn (crispy fried elephant ear fish), canh chua (sour tamarind soup), and freshly steamed rice.
